Old Mediaeval town, listed as a World Heritage Town of Art and History by UNESCO.
With a heritage unique in France, and a series of presentations based on the theme of the Middle Ages, Provins transports visitors back to the time of knights and lords.
Amongst the architectural wonders in the town:
- the famous Tour César, symbol of the town, situated on top of the hill on which the town is built. It is the only known octagonal donjon with a square base. The Tower is roofed, and inside are bells on a 17th-century wooden framework. They are reached by a staircase, and there is the governor’s room. The Tower has especially been used as a prison.
- the Saint Quiriace collegiate church, the Saint Ayoul church, the ramparts, fortified gates and 10km of underground passages!
- La Grange aux Dîmes, and old covered market, offers a realistic and faithful reconstruction of scenes from the Foires de Champagne (regional mediaeval fairs).
